Below, we tell you what it is, the metal furring price, and how to install it.

What is Metal Furring?

The term furring refers to a secure base made from strips of wood or metal that keeps other materials in place. Usually, furring is hidden behind ceilings or walls.

In metal-framed construction, the furring consists of long yet light gauge materials of various sizes and shapes.

Builders often use metal furring as a way to hold insulation (or other construction items) between materials, support a layer of material over another, as well as to provide sound barriers, or meet building codes.

Metal furring price varies, depending on metal furring sizes, thickness, and length.

How to Install Metal Furring

  1. Double check everything

Metal furring installation is a work where there is no room for error. Note that not only the work will be permanent, but it is also quite costly to replace in case something goes wrong.

As such, you want to double-check everything, especially the measurements.

If the pieces of furring you have bought are extra-long and the measurements are not certain or precise, cut them longer than is expected as it is better to trim than to extend.

  1. Find out the locations of the ceiling joists, mark the locations, and remember them

To install metal furring, you need to know where the ceiling joists are.

Once you know their locations, mark the locations where the metal furring system will be attached. Since the furring will be secured to the joists with screws, you want to get it right the first time.

  1. Attach the furring strips

The next step is to attach the metal furring strips accordingly. Create the “net” system with the tiles that will be installed in mind.

Make sure that the flanges line up perfectly with the side of every tile. To make sure of this, hold up a tile against the metal furring that will be installed from time to time.

  1. Level out the furring in place and then secure them

Ceilings are not always level. To prevent this, use a leveling tool and make sure the metal furring is level. If it isn’t level yet, use a wooden shim to fix it. Once the furring is level, secure the strips accordingly.

Construction design is not complete without a metal furring ceiling. It is the part that enables you to bind one material to another. Metal furring comes in various sizes and lengths.
